On this day in 1973, President Nixon stated that the United States and Vietnam had reached a peace agreement “…to end the war and bring peace with honor in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.”
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and North Carolina Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NCSDAR) have both partnered with the The United States of America Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration, established by Congress, to “…thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war (POW) or listed as missing in action (MIA), for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans.”
The outstanding Americans who served in this war have never been properly thanked for their service. I hope that the 50th anniversary commemorative will help alleviate this and provide these men and women with the homecoming that they deserve. Please take the time to visit the commemorative website. You’ll find all kinds of information and resources, including some for use in the classroom.
Be sure to thank all of our veterans for their service – and say a special thanks to the Vietnam era veteran during this commemoration.
