On Day 3 of our “110 Years in 110 Days” chapter celebration, I noted the DAR’s work to support our veterans with the DAR Service for Veterans Committee. Today, in honor of our veterans, our chapter members were asked to distribute thank you cards to our veterans. As each of us moves through our day, we encounter veterans. It may be when we’re in line at the grocery store and we notice the man behind us wearing a World War II veteran’s ball cap. It may be when you’re walking across the parking lot and notice that the car beside you has a window decal noting the driver’s a veteran of the Korean War. Or perhaps it’s when you’re buying lunch and see someone wearing a shirt noting that he was deployed as part of Iraqi Freedom. These are all casual encounters. But you can use that brief encounter to thank the veteran. Carry a few note cards with you addressed to “An American Hero” and signed by “A Grateful American” and hand the note to the veteran when you see him or her…or just leave it on the windshield of their car.
It’s a small, simple gesture that thanks the veteran for the significant service they provided. It makes them feel good – and you too!
Our chapter members have 80 thank you cards to give to veterans they encounter throughout the day. I hope you join us in thanking these outstanding Americans!
