I’d mentioned earlier that both Lucy Patterson and Kate Bitting Reynolds were members of our chapter who were elected to serve as a Vice President General for the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). But in more recent history, one of our chapter members was elected to the office of Curator General following her term as Vice President General. Colonel Joseph Winston Daughter Rolfe Towle Teague was very passionate about Historic Preservation efforts and the DAR Museum in particular.
The current Curator General Jennie May Rehnberg notes the following about the DAR Museum:
The founding members of the NSDAR Museum envisioned a collection of relics designed to preserve and promote the legacy of the colonial and revolutionary periods for generations to come. It is the dedicated members, volunteers, and exceptional DAR Museum professional staff who have provided the framework to one of the finest collections of American decorative arts in the country. The DAR Museum provides opportunities for individuals to view the past through exhibitions, publications, tours, interpretations, programs, podcasts and social media, which enable them to discover their own understanding and appreciation of our history. The DAR Museum has received the highly respected accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums (formerly the American Association of Museums.)
The museum was recently profiled on the CSPAN program American Artifacts. This is a wonderful profile of the museum that offers a sampling of the museum’s history and period rooms.
One of the great things about the museum is that DAR has worked hard to make it accessible to everyone. You can even view an exhibit online via Virtual Exhibitions. I hope you take the time now to explore this wonderful museum – or check it out the next time you’re in Washington, D.C.
On a personal note, Rolfe Teague passed away the same day I became Chapter Regent. But even today, her influence and passions about Historic Preservation and the DAR Museum are still felt by our membership. Inspired by Rolfe, I’ve become a Correspondent Docent for the DAR Museum. Once you explore it, it’s easy to understand the true treasure this place really is.
