Day 18 of 110: Promoting Literacy

(Originally Published Friday, January 31, 2014 – Blogger: One Daughter’s Point of View)

DAR has a special committee to focus on literacy – Literacy Promotion Committee. The Literacy Challenge Committee was established in 1989 to meet the needs of the increasing number of illiterate individuals. In July 2007 the committee’s name was changed to the Literacy Promotion Committee to better reflect the work of the committee.

Colonel Joseph Winston Chapter has been supporting literacy promotion efforts since it’s early days. The chapter reported at the 1908 NC Society of DAR State Conference that members were collecting books for the local library.

According to the most recent National Assessment of Adult Literacy, conducted by the U.S. Department of Education, as many as 1 in 7 adults in the United cannot read at levels necessary to succeed in today’s society. Across the country, Daughters are meeting the challenge and helping those with significant literacy needs to learn to read, to gain self-respect and confidence, and to reach life goals that otherwise would not be obtainable

We’re proud of our chapter’s literacy efforts that continue today.
