Day 28 of 110: Kangaroos

DAR and the DAR supported schools have a secret weapon – DAR Junior Members.

Junior members of the DAR are women who are aged 18-35 and are active and vital members of Today’s DAR. One of the projects of the Junior Members is the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund. Juniors work year-round to raise funds to support this fund, which in turn dispenses donations to the DAR supported schools. They average over $40,000 in donations to the DAR supported schools each year.

The Helen Pouch Memorial Fund was established in April 1938 and named in memory of Helen Pouch, 1901–1919. Helen was the daughter of Mrs. William H. Pouch, the first National Chairman of the Junior Membership Committee, 1937, and President General, NSDAR, 1941–1944. This fund provides medical aid, general financial assistance, and scholarships at our schools. Through the years, this fund has provided more than $2 million dollars in financial assistance for our schools.

In honor of Mrs. William Pouch, or “Aunt Helen,” as she was fondly called by the Juniors, DAR uses the kangaroo to represent the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund. This symbol was first used during the administration of Mrs. Raymond Franklin Fleck, President General 1986-1989.

Way to go Juniors! (By the way….as you’ve probably guessed….there’s a pin for that! In DAR there’s a beautiful pin for everything.)
